Club Introduction
Honored guests, my fellow members of the Commonwealth Club of California, ladies and gentlemen, permit me to merely remind ourselves as men and women who cherish our freedom we are assembled together here to hear a fellow citizen bid for a position of leadership. The candidate is the choice of the great Republican Party in our state, as that choice was expressed at the ballot box. The position for which he has been nominated is that of governor, the chief executive of our state government, of which there is but one.
I stress that the position sought, that of governor, is the chief executive of our state, of which we have but one, because I, for one, do not like to see either the president of our nation or the governor of our state assume the role of lawmaker or of judge, and use the facilities, power and prestige of the executive officer to influence the enactment of laws or to influence the interpretation thereof. I think it would be in the interests of good government for the personnel of each branch to bear in mind that the others exist too: they have their jobs and their responsibilities. I made a similar statement in presenting Governor Brown on a similar occasion on October 7.
It is now my pleasure and honor to present the Republican candidate for Governor of California, Mr. Ronald Reagan.
