Club Introduction
Our speaker today is Mrs. Katharine Graham, President of The Washington Post Company. Mrs. Graham was born in New York City and educated at Vassar College and the University of Chicago. From August 1938 to March 1939, she was here in San Francisco as a reporter on The San Francisco News. In April of 1939, she joined the editorial staff of The Washington Post, serving in the Sunday Circulation and Editorial Department. Currently, she is president of The Washington Post Company, a position to which she was appointed in September 1963. The company is the owner of the newspaper of the same name in Washington, D.C. - Newsweek magazine, numerous radio and television stations, a co-venturer in the Los Angeles Times-Washington Post News Service, and a co-venturer in the international edition of the New York Herald Tribune-Washington Post.
Mrs. Graham is the mother of four children and extremely active in civic affairs. She's a trustee of the Committee for Economic Development, the Urban Institute, George Washington University and the University of Chicago. Her topic today is fairness and freedom of the press. We're pleased to present Mrs. Katharine Graham.
