We are especially honored and pleased to welcome to our podium today the Honorable Dan Quayle, vice president of the United States.
Vice President Quayle began his very distinguished U.S. government career as a member of Congress representing Indiana's fourth district. In 1980, he was elected U.S. Senator from Indiana and was reelected in 1986. Having been chosen by President Bush as his running mate in 1988 and having helped wage that successful electoral campaign, Dan Quayle was sworn in as the 44th Vice President of the United States on January 20, 1989.
As vice president, Mr. Quayle also served as president of the United States Senate. He is a statutory member of the National Security Council and is the first Chairman of the National Space Council. In February 1989, President Bush named Mr. Quayle to head the Counsel on Competitiveness that will work to ensure U.S. international competitiveness into the 21st century.
