The sanctuary encompasses over 1,200 square miles of open ocean and coastal waters as well as bays and estuaries. The islands serve as breeding grounds for more seabirds than any other area in the contiguous United States and is the spawning ground for many fish and shellfish. The numerous mammal species include minke, blue and humpback whales, northern fur seals, elephant seals, and a population of great white sharks. Participants will be automatically registered for the event at the Club on October 21, “The Farallon Islands.”

Trip Details:
You will meet your able OCSC crew at the Berkeley Marina (easy parking) for early morning coffee and a continental breakfast. Following a sailor briefing, we set off at 7 a.m. enjoying views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. We continue toward the Farallon Islands, 27 miles off California’s coast. As we sail around the islands, our crew help us spot birds and search for wildlife. We’ll enjoy a warm clam chowder lunch onboard. And in the late afternoon with the stiff westerly breeze on our backs, we sail again under the Golden Gate, returning at approximately 7 p.m. Though no sailing experience is required, this is an active program and there are associated risks. Upon registration participants will be mailed additional information, including liability and medical forms to be filled out and returned.
