Health Care Reform from the GOP Perspective: An Insider’s View

Whether or not the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is repealed, health care policy will be a subject of intense debate for years to come. Historically, health care has been an issue championed by progressives. However, in recent years the political Right has proposed substantial changes to U.S. health care based on conservative principles, many of which have shown promise. These proposals typically have come from a small number of think tanks and consultants whose views are sought by right-leaning lawmakers.

Avik Roy is a leading conservative thinker, writer and advisor to senior Republican politicians. Yet his views surprise many liberals. A fierce proponent of the use of market forces in health care, Roy is equally vocal about the need for health care to better serve disadvantaged Americans. His innovative views have earned praise from both the Right and the Left. National Review has called him one of the nation’s “sharpest policy minds,” and radio host Hugh Hewitt has called Roy “the most influential conservative analyst on health care.” Meanwhile, New York Times’ Paul Krugman described him as man of “personal and moral courage,” and MSNBC’s Chris Hayes calls Roy’s blog “one of the best takes from conservatives on that set of issues.”

Roy’s writing has appeared in The Wall Street JournalThe New York TimesThe Washington PostUSA TodayThe Atlantic and National Review. A graduate of MIT and the Yale School of Medicine, he is a frequent guest on Fox News, Fox Business, CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CNBC, Bloomberg, CBS, PBS and HBO. Roy is the author of the book How Medicaid Fails the Poor.
