Magic Johnson in Conversation with Rick Welts: The Business of Basketball

In partnership with the University of San Francisco’s Silk Speaker Series.

Earvin "Magic" Johnson is known as one of America's best NBA basketball players. Since his retirement, Johnson has become a powerful force in business, investing in movie theaters and companies such as the Los Angeles Lakers and Starbucks. Johnson has become a leading voice on how to invest in urban communities, creating redevelopment opportunities in underserved areas. After announcing he had contracted HIV, he also became a powerful advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness. Still a commanding presence in popular culture, Johnson made history in 2012 when he became co-owner of MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers. He also co-owns the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA and Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club.

The Lansing native is constantly evolving and remaining relevant in a dynamic digital age by broadening his scope into infrastructure and technology. Through a newly formed fund, Johnson is investing more than $1 billion on infrastructure improvement in the United States. He is also one of the leading investors in a number of minority-owned tech companies. Interviewed by Rick Welts, president and COO of the Golden State Warriors, Johnson will discuss business and life lessons he learned on the basketball court and beyond.
