Understanding Russian Aggression: Imperialism or Aggrieved Self Defense?

Professor George Breslauer will discuss Russia’s attitude toward Ukraine and its motivations for invasion, as well as the rise in assassinations, trolls, disinformation and alliances against the West. He will outline possible scenarios for either escalation of aggression or settlement of the ongoing war.

About the Speaker

Professor George Breslauer has taught at UC Berkeley since 1971, specializing in Soviet, Russian and communist politics and foreign relations. He is the author of seven books and seven edited volumes on these topics, including The Rise and Demise of World Communism (2021). He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. An award-winning teacher and acclaimed scholar, Breslauer also served as executive vice chancellor and provost of the UC Berkeley campus.
