As we mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square incident, China seems stronger than ever. But the recent economic downturn may threaten the ability of China’s leaders to trade economic prosperity for political stability. Will the Communist Party be able to continue its precarious balancing act, or will reduced economic growth lead to greater internal opposition and a push for democracy? How should the United States balance its economic and security interests with its concerns for human rights in China? Where does China go from here? Experts debate the issues.
